AT TRUBLUE, WE'RE ALL ABOUT SAFETY

Our number one priority is to ensure that every experience on a TRUBLUE is a protected one.

As the maker of the TRUBLUE Auto Belay, safety is our top priority. While safety starts with our team of engineers, it finishes with you. Climbers, owners and operators can learn about or brush up on auto belay best practices for indoor climbing here in our central safety hub.

Climbing is very safe when done properly. But, a climber always has to take responsibility for their safety—whether it’s their knot, their harness or, in the case of auto belays, making sure they’re clipped into their belay loop.

Signage

Signage

Is auto-belay safety top-of-mind at your facility? Gyms can be a busy atmosphere. People get distracted or complacent, and that's when mistakes happen. Sometimes all it takes is a simple visual reminder to help climbers assess their safety situation. Plus, safety posters are a proven way to change behavior. To help reinforce proper use of auto belays, download, print, laminate and post these two free signs.

How to Auto Belay

How to Auto Belay

It's very easy to learn how to use an auto belay. The proper use of an auto belay is simple and straightforward. As with everything in climbing, it is important to avoid learning bad habits and build the right ones from the start. Most auto belay accidents occur due to human error when an experienced climber becomes complacent and forgets to clip in. Obviously, an auto belay won't work if you're not attached to it (remember, Clip It. Clip It Good.).

The best way to avoid complacency when climbing is to focus on the process rather than the outcome. Establish a routine that includes all the proper safety checks. Do not go straight to the end goal without double-checking everything simply because you're confident that you did it right since you've done it a million times before. You have a routine safety check when you're using an auto belay just like you have an established routine for your safety check with your belay partner.

If you've never used an auto belay before, you should alert the climbing wall staff that you have not been trained in the proper use of an auto belay. They will instruct you how to safely use the auto belay device in their specific setup.

The video and step-by-step instructions provided here are created for the TRUBLUE Auto Belay.

The XL Belay Gate

The XL Belay Gate is a simple way to reinforce the proper use of auto belay devices and minimize risk from climbing error. More wall coverage, larger warnings, and brighter colors make this the most effective Belay Gate to use on all TRUBLUE installations.

While not in use, the auto belay clips into the triangular Belay Gate, blocking the initial foot holds and hand holds of a climbing lane. Once the climber transfers the auto belay carabiner from the gate to their harness, the Belay Gate lays flat on the floor, opening the climbing lane and alerting others there is a climber above. Premium foam core gives the gate structure to block climbing access until users are properly attached.

The two adjustable lower loops can be attached directly to the wall with screws, under small holds, or to bolt hangers. The words 'Clip In' are in plain view when the gate is up on the wall, and the words 'Climber Above' warns others when the auto belay is in use.
